Enyart, McKinley Introduce Plan to Cut Waste, Invest in Infrastructure: Bipartisan Legislation Will Improve Highways, Sewer and Water Lines in Small Communities

Written by Murphysboro American
U.S. Congressmen David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) and Bill Enyart (D-IL)
introduced a bipartisan bill, The Protection Against Wasteful Spending Act 2014, to cut wasteful
spending and invest the money saved in improving our roads, bridges, and sewer and water
lines.
“At the end of the day, this is just good government,” said Enyart. “We need to reduce
wasteful spending and better use American’s hard earned tax dollars. This bill uses proven
cost saving measures that will reinvest billions from excessive spending into our nation’s aging
infrastructure. Representative McKinley and I think this is simply financial common sense.”
“We want to be a part of the solution for improving our nation’s infrastructure,” added
McKinley. “This bill will make that happen without creating any more financial burden to the
American taxpayer. Because this bill will target excessive and wasteful spending across the
board, it will provide tens of billions of dollars to fund our nation’s infrastructure and sewer and
water lines.”
The legislation will require IG report recommendations, outlining cost savings opportunities, to
be implemented. Items outlined in IG reports include proposals to cut excessive and wasteful
spending at federal government agencies and departments.
Last year, a total of $67 billion was identified as waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal
government by the Inspector General (IG). The IG also reported that 16,900 cost-savings
recommendations have not yet been implemented.
